We all know that according to the World Giving Index 2010 New Zealanders are the most generous givers in the world, but ever wondered who the most generous Kiwis are?

As it heads swiftly to Christmas World Vision has released some of its Smiles gifts data which answers this question.

The citizens of our capital Wellington are the most generous, amazingly followed by quake-hit Cantabrians, with the people of the Nelson and Tasman regions counted together coming in as the third most generous of the country’s regions over the last 12 months.

These rankings are compiled from the number of people that bought World Vision Smiles gifts in each region over the last 12 months as a percentage of population. In total 10,864 New Zealanders bought over 43,000 Smiles gifts.

The question now is who will be the most generous this year?

There is still time for Kiwis to buy Smiles gifts in time for Christmas this year, and as it heads towards gift-giving time World Vision is encouraging Kiwis to remember those living in poverty around the world and the true spirit of Christmas.

“It’s been a tough year for many New Zealanders. It’s given us an insight into those whose lives are continually blighted by disasters and poverty. So this Christmas let’s celebrate joyfully, but also remember and give to those whose daily lives remain a struggle,” says World Vision New Zealand CEO Chris Clarke.

World Vision Smiles gifts are one way to embrace modern gift giving and at the same time benefit those less fortunate than ourselves.

Smiles gifts are donations of items like livestock – goats, ducks and chickens being the most common – or essentials such as water and education which can be given on behalf of your friends and family.

For more information on Smiles see: http://worldvision.org.nz/Smiles/GiftCatalogue

Notes

The rankings were worked out using World Vision data on how many people bought World Vision Smiles gifts in each region compared to the population of the region according to 2010 Statistics New Zealand data.

This data is not scientific and disregards issues like advertising placement, which would affect the results. It should be used in a light-hearted way.

Moving Forward Together – Nuku Tahi – Hiko Tahi – Maranga Tahi.

Moving Forward Together is the vision that inspires us in preparing the 2012 NZCCSS Services for Older People Conference to be held at Te Raukura – Te Wharewaka o Poneke, the award-winning new venue on Wellington’s fabulous waterfront and home to the two ceremonial waka taua.

Steering the waka requires teamwork, good coordination and everyone contributing to help move forward together.

Moving Forward Together is about continuing to get closer together and reducing inequalities. Different parts of the sector (home & community support, residential care, housing), different cultures together with tangata whenua, and different levels of wealth and income.

The future of aged care in New Zealand is one where we all have a part to play in ensuring that older people can live with dignity and wellbeing. This conference aims to explore how we can help to build this vision into a reality.

We are inviting sponsors and exhibitors to join us as conference partners and we welcome proposals for conference presentations and workshops.

Peak whale stranding season is already underway and whale rescue charity Project Jonah is desperate for essential supplies to stock emergency response kits across the country.

Whale rescue teams need light-coloured bed sheets, pillowcases, garden trowels and spades – all of which are vital for emergency callouts throughout the summer.

“While specialised stranding equipment can be expensive, some of the things that can make a real difference don’t cost anything,” says Project Jonah CEO Kimberly Muncaster.

“Everyday items that you’re getting ready to throw out could be part of our critical life-saving kit.”

Each year whales and dolphins strand on New Zealand shores, and while some are sick or injured, others are healthy and just need a helping hand back out to sea.

“Saving whales isn’t as easy as it looks. We’ve got more than two thousand trained marine mammal medics up and down the country, but if they don’t have the tools they need then there isn’t a lot they can do.”

Drenched bed sheets are used to cover a stranded whale, protecting its sensitive skin from the sun and wind.

Pillowcases can be used as makeshift sandbags to help keep the whales upright, and spades and trowels make light work of shifting sand.

“Following a busy stranding season last year, our stocks are low and we need to prepare for the emergencies that lie ahead,” says Muncaster.

“We want people to understand that the things they no longer want, might be the things we really need.”

Please donate your old bed sheets, pillowcases, spades and trowels by handing them in at Dulux Trade centres nationwide.

Project Jonah has been actively saving stranded whales for more than 25 years. It works closely with the Department of Conservation, the government agency responsible for managing strandings in New Zealand and relies solely on volunteers and donations to carry out its rescue and education work.

Aucklanders will have the chance to add their own letters to the global total on the final day of the Write for Rights 2011 Letterwriting Marathon, Saturday 17 December at an event in Aotea Square.

Since 3 December, people around the world have been using the power of the pen to stand up for individuals facing human rights violations.

From 10am to 7pm Amnesty International will be joined by some well known Kiwis including Shavaughn Ruakere from Shortland Street and author Emily Perkins, to write letters that save lives and open prison doors.

A Christmas tree will feature as part of the event, remaining bare until enough letters and cards are written to fill its branches, when it will be lit up to shine a light on the people who featured in the letters.

There will also be live music by Caitlin Smith.

Applications for White Poppy Peace Scholarships for research during the 2012 academic year opened on Human Rights Day, on the sixty-third anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR).

The Peace Scholarships comprise at least two grants that are awarded each year to assist students at any tertiary education institution in Aotearoa New Zealand with research into the impacts of militarism, militarisation and warfare; alternatives to militarism, militarisation and warfare; or collective non-violent responses to state violence.

The Peace Scholarships open on Human Rights Day each year to draw attention to the link between militarism and human rights. While the link between armed conflict and gross violations of human rights is obvious, the link between militarism and human rights is perhaps less well-known.

The purpose of the Peace Scholarships is to increase understanding of the role of New Zealand governments (past and present) in the global cycle of violence; of the impacts of militarism, militarisation and warfare here and overseas; and of alternative ways of resolving conflict.

About the Peace Scholarships

The Peace Scholarships comprise at least two grants that are awarded each year to assist with research into:

the impacts of militarism, militarisation and warfare;

alternatives to militarism, militarisation and warfare; or

collective non-violent responses to state violence.

The Peace Scholarships are for students at any tertiary education institution in Aotearoa New Zealand.

Each grant is a minimum of $1,000 – one is for a Māori or Moriori student, with the other/s open to any student with New Zealand citizenship or permanent residency.

The Peace Scholarships are entirely funded by donations, including those collected during the White Poppies for Peace Annual Appeal (17 to 24 April). The number and amount of the grants awarded annually is determined by the amount raised during each year.

How to apply for a Peace Scholarship

Guidelines for applicants are available at: http://www.peacescholar.org.nz and the application form is available on request from email: peacescholarship@ymail.com .

The deadline for applications for Peace Scholarships to assist with research in the 2012 academic year is Friday, 24 February 2012.

In celebration of International Volunteer Day 2011 (5 December), the Office for the Community and Voluntary Sector (OCVS) released the updated Quarterly Generosity Indicators.

The How do New Zealanders give? series is a result of collaboration between the OCVS and the Generosity Hub, a cross-sectoral group from business, government and the non-profit sector.

The latest update provides information on five key indicators of generosity in New Zealand up to the September quarter 2011.

The report found that since the December 2009 quarter, the percentages of people volunteering, donating money or donating goods have generally trended upwards. Median dollars donated per month have remained stable.

Similarly, median hours volunteered per month have remained stable, but there may be a slight downward trend emerging, which is not immediately obvious from the indicator.

For more information on the Quarterly Generosity Indicators and to download the September 2011 research report, visit: http://ocvs.govt.nz/work-programme/building-knowledge/giving-research/qgi-december-2011.html

A man who has spent his life being active in and covering some of the country’s most significant moments within the disability sector has won this year’s “Attitude ACC Supreme Award”.

Mike Gourley, journalist, researcher and host of the radio show One in Five was announced as the winner by Human Rights Commissioner David Rutherford and ACC Board Member Murray Hilder at a black tie function at the Viaduct Events Centre in Auckland.

The Attitude Awards celebrate the outstanding achievements of New Zealanders living with a disability and have grown out of the Attitude TV series, which screens on TV ONE on Sundays and TVNZ 7 on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.

It was Mike’s second award of the night. He also won the Making a Difference Award which recognises an unsung hero who has made a significant contribution to improving the lives of people with disabilities. He won the use of a Toyota Signature Class car for a year and $5000 worth of air travel thanks to Air New Zealand.

His passion comes from living in the shoes of the people he supports. Born with a rare congenital condition, where his arms did not fully develop and also caused a heart condition, Mike has spoken out for people living with disabilities. He has advocated for the rights of disabled people to participate in the community, in work places and on the sports field on the same basis as their nondisabled counterparts.

Mike is recovering from a stroke he suffered earlier this year, which prevented him from attending the awards, Murray Hilder accepted the Supreme Award on his behalf.

Through his career Mike has covered most of the major victories of disabled people such as the development of the 2001 Disability Strategy and the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, which the disabled community supported heavily.

As a broadcaster he brings visibility to major disability issues in New Zealand and helps people living with disabilities tell their stories, ensuring their issues are heard by a mainstream public audience.

His long list of achievements also includes collecting the Roosevelt international disability award in New York in 2008, which New Zealand won in recognition of its achievements in disability and support.

Other Attitude Award category winners announced on December 1 were Gabrielle Hogg (Youth Award), Patricia McQueen (Courage in Sport), Sophie Pascoe (Sport Performer), Eddie Low (Artistic Achievement), Mary Schnakenberg (Hall of Fame Inductee), Mission Heights Junior College, (Attitude ACC Employer) and Mark Grantham who took home the Spirit of Attitude Award.

Attitude TV executive producer Robyn Scott-Vincent says that every year the awards highlight people with incredible stories and achievements which prove to be inspirational.

“Our aim for the Attitude Awards is to help create more awareness and support of people who live with disability,” Robyn says. “We hope to gain more inclusion in society and recognition for the incredible people that win these awards and those who are featured on the ‘Attitude’ TV series.”

ACC is the principal sponsor, supporting the Attitude ACC Employer Award and the ACC Supreme Award.

“Once again, the Attitude Awards have shown us what all people can achieve if they have a goal, a positive attitude, determination and the right support,” says Ralph Stewart, ACC Chief Executive.

“All the nominees for this year’s Awards faced obstacles that most of us would find daunting, yet they chose to view those obstacles as a challenge that could be successfully overcome. Like everyone at the Awards, I found this tremendously inspiring and I thank the nominees for sharing their fantastic success stories.”

Toyota New Zealand, The Lion Foundation, Air New Zealand, Westpac, Wayne Francis Charitable Trust, Drake Medox, IHC Foundation and the Ministry of Health also committed to supporting the awards.

The Quit Group, which runs the national stop smoking service Quitline, is pleased to announce that His Excellency Lieutenant General The Right Honourable Sir Jerry Mateparae, GNZM, QSO, Governor-General of New Zealand has become the organisation’s inaugural patron.

Governor-General, Lt Gen The Rt Hon Sir Jerry Mateparae, said he was looking forward to working with the Quit Group: “The Quit Group has a vision of a smokefree Aotearoa and I am keen to support the services it provides to enable more New Zealand smokers to quit and to quit for life. While I am pleased to be the organisation’s inaugural vice-regal patron, in keeping with the Quit Group’s vision, I too look forward to a day when it no longer needs a patron because New Zealand will be a smokefree nation.”

The Quit Group’s Chairperson, Annette Milligan said: “This is the first time that we have had a patron and the whole organisation is extremely excited about the news. His Excellency is the nephew of Edith Rerekura and Wira Kerei both of whom are long term employees of Quitline which makes it even more special. It is particularly pleasing to have someone of such stature support our smokefree kaupapa and we look forward to working with His Excellency.”

Funded by the Ministry of Health, Quitline operates a national smoking cessation service. Anyone seeking support can call the Quitline for free on 0800 778 778 or visit http://www.quit.org.nz to access online support, the online blog community and to register for Txt2Quit, a free text-based service.

Quitline can also put callers who request face-to-face support in contact with relevant service providers.
